I’m in a fallow period socially.
I used to feel more pressure to keep up the pretense of a normal social life, but I haven’t really felt up to doing much heavy lifting in my relationships with other people for a while. I just hope my friends don’t take it the wrong way if I don’t reach out personally or make plans with them. I just have a reduced capacity for that kind of stuff.
That said, I always forget how much I enjoy being outside on a nice day until I’m actually out there. I really should try doing that more often, at least before the first snows come and I just want to hibernate.
I watched the season premiere of SNL on the weekend. I don’t bother staying up for it live anymore, but I try to check the recording before reading the discourse in a group chat I’m in on Twitter (I will never call it what Elon wants me to). I know the first show isn’t necessarily indicative of the rest of the season’s quality, but there was so much about it that exemplifies every complaint I’ve had about SNL in the last few seasons: the gratuitous stunt-casting for political impressions, interminable cold openings, and the need to clumsily reference as many news stories as possible in a single sketch. It just seems like the show’s trying way too hard to create viral moments and get news coverage. It’s all so forced, like they’re just doing search engine optimization instead of comedy writing. There’s also the jokesplaining and extended Weekend Update bits involving someone dressed as either an animal or object.
Maybe I’m just a little salty that they let Chloe Troast (the most versatile new hire in years) go, or that they never fully knew how to use Molly Kearney or Punkie Johnson.
It’s October; spooky season again. Thought this would be appropriate to close out with.
